Abstract

This dissertation is an in-depth analysis of Tyndale’s and Zwingli’s Eucharistic theology in order to show similarities between the two as well as Tyndale’s departures from the Zurich Reformer.
At first glance their Eucharistic doctrines seem to be congruent, an idea prominently figuring in the Encyclopedia Britannica (1964) claiming that Tyndale adopted Zwingli’s advanced Eucharist position. But a second look reveals various divergences, and a third look, finally, corroborates the latter and even reveals considerable dissimilarities, disclosing Tyndale’s idiosyncrasies in his doctrine of the Lord’s Supper. The thesis argues against a sweeping assertion of Tyndale being an undiluted Zwinglian. This is demonstrated by a comprehensive balance of the two Reformers’ respective concepts, which are finally weighed up against each other.
The high proportion of crucial differences in spite of a considerable amount of similarities favours the conclusion that Tyndale expounded his own distinct doctrine of the Lord’s Supper.
