Abstract

Scenographic world-building, a design framework for creating story-based, immersive environments that envelop an audience in a storyworld, is drawn from theatrical, architectural, and themed entertainment practices. I discuss my involvement as a designer for Boomtown Fair, a weekend music festival in southern England, in 2018 and 2019 to lay out the unique collaborative world-building developed for each yearly chapter of the festival. An author-designer must understand the shape of the storyworld-as-whole and the experience of encountering details throughout that world. I propose a design approach to developing and authoring immersive environments.
