Abstract

This paper explores the concept of an ‘interface' as a process of mediation that allows for tacit knowing. It takes the example of a breakdown in apprenticeship within a distributed work setting for which ‘lacking experience' is identified as the cause. The investigation uses two examples of breakdown, firstly, interpreting colours within a design task of landscape architecture, and secondly, collaborative sketching using an electronic whiteboard. Both cases pose difficulties in being co-present at the level of human rhythmic synchrony and entrainment. This work is being extended in collaboration with the Centre for Music and Science, University of Cambridge, UK.
