Abstract

'Frankenstein' reflects on contemporary theories and practices of education, including those of the mill manager and 'father of socialism' Robert Owen. Frankenstein and Owen both seek, in effect, to use technical skill to remould life itself. Both projects are symptomatic of an odd sense of reality becoming unreal and provisional - and that emerges expecially clearly when the fictional scientist and the historical reformer are set alongside each other.
