Abstract

'It's Inside' began as a collaborative work based on research into the processes of imaging and accounting for a terminal illness. It was completed by Meynell alone and in that respect it also explored the process of writing and authoring on behalf of another.
The book's contents combined the artist's diaries and sketch books with the medical accounts of a consultant surgeon and a palliative care-worker from Mildmay Hospice. In addition, much of the artist's primary research material was included, conducted in collaboration with Sina Dorudi, (colorectal surgeon at the Royal London Hospital) Geoff Vowles (histopathologist at the Royal London Hospital), and Professor Henryk Bartel (Hammersmith Hospital).
It's Inside expanded on a range of drawing and notational techniques. It took the representation and experience of disease as its central theme, following a conceptual tradition of art practice in which personal histories overlap the wider realm of social and aesthetic ideas, through (a particular) practice of everyday life.
The book layered images and texts that could be read separately or cross-referenced with scientific concepts paralleling artistic processes, in which the difference between a medical image and a visceral response remain un-reconciled. Meynell designed the book to enable a reading across texts, to form an expansive approach to interdisciplinarity combining biopolitical analysis with contemporary subjectivity.
It's Inside was an artwork (in which the artist maintained control over image, text & design) placed within a mainstream international book market. It has been distributed internationally by Marion Boyars Publications.
