Description

‘Another Land' was a solo show commissioned as one of four exhibitions in an artist-series, including Tom Hunter and Bill Viola, presented within the context of contemporary artists influenced by the Old Masters and how such imagery manifests in their work. Each artist was given sole use of one of the quadrangle galleries at The Graves within its permanent collection.
Another Land reworked three images by Hieronymus Bosch through meticulously editing out all signs of life until only the landscape and background objects remained. The three digitally constructed large-scale black and white photographic works revealed representations of the landscapes of Heaven and Hell through a combined vantage point of the medieval imagination and contemporary observation.
Four essays in the publication Another Land further disseminated Coutts's work, exploring it from markedly differing positions which nevertheless accumulatively share an investment in the complexities of how we view appropriated imagery.
(Book details: Hardback with duotone details from the photographs including 3 foldouts of all three images, ISBN:0954065816). Contributors: John Stezaker (Senior Tutor at The Royal College of Art), Joseph Leo Koerner (Professor of Art History at Harvard University), Anita Phillips (author) and David Burrows (artist, critic and writer). The book was published by Mantis, London, and distributed internationally.
The making of this work and the accompanying publication was supported by an individual visual artist's grant from Arts Council England and had further support from Middlesex University and Danielle Arnaud Contemporary Art.
The ‘Another Land' series also featured in the exhibition A Season in Hell at Danielle Arnaud Contemporary Art in 2006 with work by John Stezaker, Rachel Reupke and Hiraki Sawa, and in the group show Oil and Silver: 5 dialogues between painting and photography at Hoopers Gallery in Feb, 2007.
