Abstract

Durling's scholarly activities are concerned principally with: 1) building an international scholarly infrastructure to support high quality research and to disseminate its outcomes; and 2) standards of doctoral education. A selection of both kinds of research activity are shown here.
Conference organisation is often in conjunction with major research societies (Design Research Society, International Association of Societies of Design Research), and has the intention of developing standards for conference peer review. He was responsible for leading the first two major DRS international conferences (Common Ground, UK 2002 and Futureground, Australia 2004).
This output refers to proceedings of the first DRS international conference, hosted by Brunel University UK. This was a general design research conference, with an overarching theme of seeking common ground between the various design disciplines. 180 delegates from 25 countries attended a 4 day event, with 100 presenters. Peer review was by an internationally based team of 40 reviewers by double blind review on both abstracts and full papers. An experimental research exhibition was held concurrently. Published proceedings (book plus CDROM with full papers, delegates, editorial etc.) were available to delegates at the time of registration. Keynote speakers included Richard Buchanan (Carnegie-Mellon), Peter Butenshoen (ICSID), and Penny Sparke (Kingston). This was an event intended to develop a global community for design research in collaboration with colleagues from Europe, Asia, and the Americas.
