Abstract

French Translation, Bayard, Paris, 2005
This chapter concerns the relation between mathematics and the human sciences, and raises the question of the relation of structure as encountered in psychoanalysis, in the history of art and architecture, sociology, in anthropology and linguistics with that found in mathematics. The weakest possible answer would be that there is no real relation between them; a slightly stronger answer would be that a relation exists but is of a metaphorical kind. However I argue that the two are identical. This step was first taken in work I recovered from the Berlin Research Institute of Kurt Lewin in the 1920s. Lewin initiated the use of the structure of real mathematical spaces (topology). Recently Latin Schools of psychoanalysis have taken up these research themes - and a small number of researchers work in this area in Franco-Hispanic schools of psychoanalytic work. I am the only researcher working on these themes in the Anglo-Saxon world, and I am regularly invited - throughout the world - to give congress presentations of this work internationally. Harvard, UCLA, The State University of New York, Universities and Clinical organisations in Melbourne, Buenos Aires, Rio de Janeiro, Caracas, Paris, Amsterdam, Maastricht, Ghent, Rennes, Marseille, Lyon, Rome, Milan, Zakopane, Ljubljana, and in the UK.
