Abstract

The titles listed below are the principle axes of a personal website. This website represents my research into distinct but inseparable modes of scholarly work. It is based around two central pieces, Wotan Envy and Sublime Slavery, which resemble each other in that they constitute a coherent investigation of very different materials which is rethought in the ‘real time' of work done over years. Otherwise they touch each other only at one or two points, but are interwoven through a series of other pieces constantly referenced and available.
First the site is a record of subject and theory based investigations into visual and aural cultures, questions of sexuality and representation and the politics of cultural discourses. Second it is an ongoing interrogation and practice of writing as a constant mode of drift between disciplines and objects, research into rhetorical modes from learned discourse to anecdotal reflections and their relations, and the representation of what I call conceptual drift – the shift of apparently singular concepts between archives in a series of mutual derangements. Different forms and modes of scholarship at their limits coexist allowing for an exploration of extreme differences in the starting point for thought
‘Wotan Envy' part published in Parallax, ISSN 1353-4645, 2006, Vol. 12, No. 4, pp. 27 – 50. ‘Sexual Anaphora' part published in umbr(a) ISSN 1087-0830, ISBN 0-9666452-5-1, 2002, pp. 87 – 96. ‘Bayreuth Essay' given as lecture in the series World Cities , Institute of German and Romance Studies, London, June 2006,. ‘Sublime Slavery' part published in The Eight Technologies of Otherness (Routledge 1997) based on work given at an distinguished visiting professorship at the Humanities Centre, University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, 1995.
