Abstract | The Performance Pack is a single authored publication and artefact (artwork in limited edition of 175) commissioned by the Live Art Development Agency and Tate Modern in collaboration with Arts Council England. It considers and embodies the relationship between Fine Art and performance by proposing various models for understanding the development of artworks which utilise performance. The use of performance within fine art works has been common place since the early Twentieth Century, but there has been little analysis of the ways in which performance operates outside the genres of theatre or live art, in other words as a technique or application rather than as a mode of address. Just as costume is a single element of theatre but the principal form of fashion, so too performance is used as an element in the creation of artworks (which might otherwise not be considered as performances). The Performance Pack has various applications, including enabling The Performance Pack Performance, a performance about performance. As such it was launched at Tate Modern in London, and has been performed internationally (including USA, China, Ireland, and Switzerland) by Joshua Sofaer and others. The Performance Pack is in the collections of many international Arts venues and Universities, including Tate Modern, London; The Baltic, Newcastle; National Gallery, Finland; The Walker Arts Center, Minneapolis. |
