Description

Temporary large-scale sound/video installation/performance, commissioned by the Wiener Festwochen and located in the tunnel at U3 Neubaugasse station from 10.05.04 to 27.05.04. The installation aimed to capture the traces of an urban journey, presenting/examining the walkers' observations and recollections of places through juxtaposing their visual and aural viewpoints on projections and speakers that were sited in the underground tunnel. This public presentation of private reactions and recollections of the walk aimed to reveal and capture the psychic geography of the city and weave these into the ‘reality' of the landscape creating a human geography. It examined physical sensations, perceptions and reactions of selected Viennese inhabitants on a timed walk (50mins) through the city. The walkers, ranging in age from 7 to 90, selected to reflect a diverse range of perspectives, followed bassist Tim Harris, picking a random path through the streets of the city, starting and ending in a 200m access tunnel immediately beneath the city. Verbal accounts gathered on the day and the video record of the walkers' journey were mounted in an installation for 11 video screens and 12 loudspeakers, and voices/images were underscored by Harris' musical account of the journey.
The work was made through the gathering of personal data stimulated by a random but formal procession in order to present an exposition of momentary perception and layered meaning in the city. The overarching concern was the consideration of the ways in which humans and the physical structures of cities interact and a desire to celebrate the civic while acknowledging the individual.
Review, Die Press: "... Miller has gathered the mundane from street life and brought it to a dark place, where - lit and directed - it mysteriously gleams and glitters; an enrapturing experience of the city not just for Underground passengers."
