Description

'Jordan Town' is a 50-minute multi-media theatre experience that combines my original music composition and performance, contemporary dance and film, and premiered at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe in 2001 ahead of a national tour supported by Arts Council England. I initiated the project as a vehicle for exploring the theme of travelling within a landscape of song. The project worked across media, investigating the relationship of art forms - especially music composition, dance and film. I collaborated with choreographer/dancer Tom Sapsford of the Royal Ballet and the filmmaking duo, The Honey Brothers (Mark and Daniel Goddard) and performed with my own Ensemble X string quartet. Jordan Town is a modern day song cycle, drawing on the traditions of lieder, jazz and pop styles, and enquires creatively into these. The performance outcome aimed to enable performers to discover and instantiate new points of connection with and between the media exploited. This process led to my further developing the overlapping sections and transitions between the elements and aspects of the staging. The work proposes a new form of musical theatre in which each component retains its integrity while establishing a collective, albeit fragmented identity.
