Description | 'Snow' was commissioned by Arts Council England for the BBC and NPS as part of the 'Dance for the Camera' series. It tests the possibilities of using found archival footage (dating from between 1880-1960) in the formulation of a new work. Working closely with editor David Hinton, I wanted to explore the potential for and develop a technique for an on-screen choreography that might create a dynamic new form, while maintaining the integrity of the original footage. The research process was thus interdisciplinary, practitioner-interactive, 'hands-on', historicising and exploratory/speculative: the resulting film explores the idea of the ghosting body, in which the live moment of the dancing figure, captured on film, is reconfigured in a new performance. That performance effectively underlines and it defies the passage of time: despite the fact that the original, dancing body has disappeared, leaving only traces of the live, dance-expert input, the film effects a technologically-'magical' restaging, and in this sense, 'the dancer' is emergent as a technologically-enabled site and set of possible actions. |
