Abstract

This is an essay in a special edition of the journal Cultural Studies entitled ‘The Secret Issue' and guest-edited by the author. This issue also includes the text of Mark Poster's 2005 lecture on 'Secrecy' at Middlesex.
'The Secret Issue' is an output from a larger-scale research project on the themes of cultural theory and new cultural studies which is now completed and its outputs published. Other published outputs from this project include the monograph Knowledge Goes Pop and the co-edited collection New Cultural Studies.
