Developing learner autonomy via part time work.

The aim of the paper is to review and share good practice in developing learner autonomy, via the description and analysis of a case study. It begins by outlining the concept and practice of autonomy, and the employment context within which the focus module, "Learning from Part-time Work" was developed.
The case module is described: the rationale, aims and objectives and assessment scheme, together with three heuristics used to help learners develop an autonomous approach. Firstly, the articulation cycle is presented. This provides the foundation, the “why”, for the module. Secondly, we explain how we help extend the student’s perspective on possible domains of learning using the A.S.K.E typology. Thirdly, the “what” of workplace learning will be enumerated: for example organisational structure, culture and management style. How the above develop autonomy is then indicated. Finally learning with routine is explored. Two examples of how learners have responded to such circumstances, and thereby demonstrated their autonomy, are provided.
