A retrospect of Raymond Williams's classic Culture and Society, re-examining the political and intellectual constitution of the work, then moving on to consider the dominant meanings of 'culture' in political controversy today. This essay originated as an address to the Raymond Williams Society on the fiftieth anniversary of the publication of Culture and Society.
