Abstract | In the 1920s and 1930s nearly three million new private houses were built, the majority of them in new suburbs on the edges of towns and cities. Derided at the time by the architectural press, these homes were nonetheless enormously popular. With their tiled roofs and pebbledash, their gardens and bay windows, they epitomised a particularly British idea of 'home'. |
