Description

Richard Layzell is a central collaborator in this process and has the title of Creative Director on the team. Private Dancer is a new performance work that takes place in and around a specially designed and built 'house'. The house is a large, realistically scaled installation that contains 5 individual rooms. Each room is filled with the personal memorabilia and objects that belong to 5 solo dancers who each inhabit one of the rooms and who perform there to an audience of one. We, as audience, are invited to enter their private domain. It is secretive and intimate, and as a performance arena the room opens a portal to a normally unseen and unknown perspective of a disabled person.
Layzell's roles in the development, production and performance of the work were as follows: as a mentor to, and central collaborator with, Janice Parker; as visual and installation artist to create the concept, design and construction of the 'house'; as a performer, in the key role of 'host', within the work.
