Description

Suit the Action to the Word is a performance by Richard Layzell. The development of this piece was linked with the recently uncovered autobiographical knowledge that Layzell's ancestors lived in a street near the site of the new building in Colchester in the mid 19th Century. This led to extensive local and national research into the life of Phoebe Layzell, Layzell's great great grandmother. Through her relocation to London and residence in Buckingham Street she shared a house with the eminent Victorian architect William Burges and had the journalist Dutton Cook as a neighbour. Dutton Cook's published text Suit the Action to the Word led to the title for this piece.
This performance has developed out of extensive research from a commission by Firstsite Colchester. Firstsite is a major regional contemporary art venue with an ambitious new building programme. This commission was originally linked to the opening of the new building but following huge delays its completion date is still unknown.
