Abstract

This essay explores neoliberalism’s predatory practices, both global and local, which are at work to dissolve democracy, by enslaving its citizens, demobilizing the working class, subordinating knowledge and cultural workers and reduced the role of education to corporate-style managerialism and maximization of profit (Levidow, 2001). In response, I advocate for the development of a ‘public’ critical pedagogy, which recognizes the need for personal liberty and collective consciousness that can help us solve these long-standing challenges to the public interest and academic freedom in this diminishing democracy’ (Giroux, 2004).
