Abstract | Technological innovations have developed a wide range of commercial, industrial and personal applications. Technological growth has also facilitated developments in the delivery of innovative approaches in distance learning. This paper examines the use of SMS technology for the development of an active approach to learning on the part of students, by complementing and enhancing their learning experience. It outlines the context in which this development has taken place, noting the increasing and worldwide use of mobile technology. It then reviews the relevant literature in the field, and outlines the methodology used for this preliminary study. It also describes the innovation and identifies its unique feature: it requires participating students to provide a rationale for their text response to a case example, rather than just a yes/ no or multiple-choice selection. Finally, implications for the future in terms of further developments are identified. |
