Abstract

In this essay the authors explore the roots of the British Labour Party defeat in the 2010 general election. They reject the notion that the party lost power for superficial reasons such as its policies on immigration and welfare reform. They suggest that Labour's defeat was due to having lost the trust of the people and they urge that the party return to its core values.
