Abstract

Social democracy in its current form has run its course. One response is to retreat back into tradition; another is to adopt a celebratory attitude toward indeterminacy and in-betweenness. Neither faces up to the presence of loss - loss of certainty, loss of future, loss of political belonging and political purchase on the world. We have inherited a rich critical theoretical language but we can sense its limitations. We need to find new and different ways of thinking and doing, but we will only find them on the basis of what we learn from the traditions we inherit.
