Title'And Europe will be stunned': Yael Bartana and JRMiP
AuthorsSliwinska, B.
Abstract

This article examines the three films Mary Koszmary/ Nightmares (2007), Mur i wieza/ Wall and tower (2009) and Zamach/ Assassination (2011), first presented by Israeli- born artist Yael Bartana's representation of the Polish Pavillion at the 54th Venice Biennale and subsequently widely-toured. Sliwinska argues that Bartana's film trilogy And Europe Will Be Stunned (2007-2011) and her idea for the JRMiP are 'embedded in a critique of histories of nationalisms and narratives of Zionism, anti-Semitism and the impact of the Holocaust in Europe which have generated the call (and the right) for return. JRMiP was initially a fictional group founded by Bartana calling for the return of Polish Jews to their Fatherland and its aims were summarized in a manifesto available in the Pavilion.' The author's reading draws on Jacques Rancière and Jean François Lyotard’s discussion of temporalities and goes on to consider the writing of Ewa Plonowska Ziarek on aesthetics and nationalisms.
