Abstract

Statelessness in Europe has escaped the high level of scrutiny and attention of academics, policy makers and civil society, afforded to related issues such as refugees and migration. Despite increased activity spearheaded by the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and some academics and NGOs, much needs to be done to mainstream the issue, protect stateless persons from human rights abuse and ultimately eradicate statelessness in Europe. This Special Issue on Statelessness of the European Journal of Migration and Law brings together the writings of academics and activists who have developed considerable expertise on the subject. It is the first of its type, and stands both as a testament to increasing policy and academic focus on the issue and as a reminder that we are still some way away from fully understanding the scope of the issue in Europe, and achieving meaningful standards of protection and levels of reduction.
