Abstract

This book explores one of the most profound cultural changes to occur in British society since the 1950s--the impact of Jamaican popular music and culture on the indigenous population. "Black culture, white youth" explores the broader ramifications of sustained interaction between black and white Britons in both inner-city and suburban contexts. The book traces the historical progress of the reggae tradition, from its genesis in the Caribbean, through to its mass marketing and consumption in post-war white youth cultures. It evaluates some of the key shifts in cultural identity that have occurred as a result of these processes, and assesses the implications for the long-term politics of "race" in British society.
