A question of intervention - tectonic or autonomous?

Adaptation is key to the practice of designing interiors. The design process inevitably involves the adaptation of particular spaces into specific places of purpose and occupancy. The notion of adaptive intervention in interiors has existed through human encounter and interaction since we first sought cover and protection. Adaptation and reuse are also certainly not newly acknowledged terms in Interior Architecture and Design. Due to permanence of structure, buildings have a tendency to outlive the interiors for which they were originally purposed. Adaptation was highlighted as an area of architectural interest in Philippe Robert’s ground breaking study in 19891 dedicated to the subject. However, in this publication Adaptive Intervention is interrogated as a theme relative to how the repurposing of existing buildings migrates to the forefront of architectural practice when concern is raised over declining new build opportunities.
