Abstract | This chapter investigates the 2010 DreamWorks Animation film How To Train Your Dragon. It looks at the tension between the film's high-fantasy elements, drawn from such literary classics at The Lord of the Rings, and its references to contemporary American popular culture, most prominently teen and high school comedies. The former elements are used to characterise the film's adult characters, while the latter characterise its young protagonists, with the culture clash inherent in the combination of intertextual influences being used to emphasise the inter-generational tension which drives the film's plot |
