Subject specialist
Higher Education Commission Mauritius

As a subject specialist tasked with assessing the validation of a program that a university wishes to deliver, I find myself immersed in a range of activities crucial to this role. These activities involve a comprehensive evaluation of various aspects of the proposed program to ensure its alignment with academic standards, industry expectations, and regulatory requirements.

Firstly, I am deeply involved in reviewing all program documentation meticulously. This includes poring over proposals, syllabi, course outlines, learning objectives, assessment methods, and resource requirements. Through this thorough examination, I aim to gauge whether the proposed program meets the necessary criteria for academic rigor and relevance.

Furthermore, I conduct a detailed analysis of the program's curriculum. This involves scrutinizing the content to ascertain whether it adequately covers essential topics, concepts, and skills pertinent to the field of study. By assessing the coherence, sequencing, and depth of the curriculum, I endeavor to determine its suitability for achieving the intended learning outcomes.

In addition, I evaluate the program's alignment with industry standards and practices. Drawing upon my expertise and potentially consulting with professionals in the field, I ensure that the program equips graduates with the knowledge and skills necessary for successful careers in the industry.

Another critical aspect of my role involves assessing the expertise of the faculty members who will be responsible for delivering the program. I carefully evaluate their qualifications, experience, and proficiency to ensure they possess the necessary competencies to effectively impart the curriculum and support student learning.

Furthermore, I review the proposed assessment methods to determine their appropriateness for measuring student learning and achievement of program outcomes. It is essential to ascertain whether these assessments are varied, authentic, and aligned with the curriculum and learning objectives.

Additionally, I assess the availability and adequacy of resources required to deliver the program effectively. This encompasses evaluating the availability of faculty, facilities, equipment, technology, and support services to ensure they meet the needs of high-quality teaching and learning experiences.

Depending on the scope of the validation process, I may conduct site visits to the university or interviews with key stakeholders, such as faculty members, administrators, students, and industry representatives. These interactions provide valuable insights into the program's strengths, weaknesses, and areas for improvement.

Finally, I compile my findings, observations, and recommendations into detailed assessment reports. These reports serve as essential documentation for decision-making by university administrators and accreditation bodies, guiding efforts to enhance the quality, relevance, and effectiveness of the program being validated.

In conclusion, my role as a subject specialist is pivotal in ensuring the successful validation of the program. Through my meticulous assessments and expert insights, I contribute to the university's commitment to delivering high-quality education and meeting the evolving needs of students and stakeholders.

External Board Member
University of Technology Mauritius

As an external board member at a university, I was engaged in a variety of activities integral to the role. These activities encompass a broad range of responsibilities that contribute to the governance, oversight, and advancement of the institution.

One of the primary duties I undertake is attending board meetings. Regular participation in these meetings allows me to contribute my expertise and insights to discussions on university governance, policies, strategic planning, and decision-making. Through active engagement in these sessions, I aim to ensure that the university's leadership receives diverse perspectives and informed input to guide their decisions.

In addition to attending board meetings, I play a crucial role in reviewing and providing feedback on institutional policies. This involves carefully assessing policies related to academic programs, research, student affairs, finance, and human resources. By offering constructive feedback, I help ensure that these policies align with best practices and support the university's mission and goals.

Furthermore, my involvement extends to participation in various committees established by the board. Whether serving on audit committees, finance committees, academic affairs committees, or governance committees, I actively contribute to the review of specific issues or projects and make recommendations to the full board. This engagement allows me to address key institutional challenges and opportunities in a focused and collaborative manner.

Engaging with stakeholders is another essential aspect of my role. I make efforts to interact with diverse stakeholders, including university administrators, faculty members, students, alumni, donors, government officials, and community members. External examiner
University of Technology Mauritius

As an external examiner for an academic program, my responsibilities encompass various activities aimed at ensuring the quality, fairness, and consistency of assessments and academic standards. One of my primary duties involves meticulously reviewing assessment materials, including examination papers, coursework assignments, and other assessment components. My objective is to ensure that these materials align closely with the learning outcomes of the program and uphold rigorous academic standards.

In addition to reviewing assessment materials, I actively participate in examination boards or assessment committees. During these meetings, I provide valuable input on assessment decisions, such as reviewing marks and grades and offering constructive feedback on student performance. My aim is to contribute to fair and transparent assessment processes that accurately reflect students' knowledge and abilities.

Another essential aspect of my role is assessing student work. I carefully evaluate a sample of student work, which may include examination scripts, coursework assignments, or dissertations. Through this assessment process, I strive to maintain consistency and fairness in grading across different modules or courses, ensuring that all students are evaluated equitably.

Furthermore, I play a crucial role in moderating assessments. This involves comparing and standardizing assessment marks and grades to promote equity and consistency across different markers or assessors. By participating in the moderation process, I help uphold the integrity of the assessment system and ensure that students receive fair and accurate evaluations of their work.

As part of my responsibilities, I provide feedback to academic staff on the quality of assessments, teaching, and learning activities. I offer suggestions for improvement to enhance the overall academic standards of the program. Additionally, I prepare detailed written reports for the academic institution, summarizing my findings, observations, and recommendations based on my review of assessment materials, student work, and examination boards.
