Biography

In the realm of criminal law, few names resonate with the distinction and reverence accorded to Mrs. Melany Nagen a Mauritian Barrister-at-law renowned for her unparalleled expertise, unwavering commitment to justice, and significant contributions to legal education. Growing up in a society rich in diversity yet challenged by complex legal issues, Mrs. Nagen was inspired from a young age to pursue a career in law. She commenced her academic pursuit with a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) degree at the University of Hertfordshire UK, demonstrating early on a keen analytical mind and exceptional academic prowess. Seeking to hone her expertise in criminal law, Mrs. Nagen furthered her studies in the United Kingdom, where in 2012 she completed the Bar Professional Training Court at the University of the West of England in Bristol with a specialisation in criminal justice.

By October 2012, Mrs. Nagen was called to the Bar of England and Wales, at the Honourable Society of Lincoln’s Inn, marking the beginning of a distinguished legal career that would span jurisdictions and legal challenges. On her return to  Mauritius where Mrs. Nagen was called to the Bar at the Supreme Court of Mauritius in January 2014, her prowess in the courtroom and deep understanding of criminal law quickly garnered attention, leading to her being frequently interviewed by local News about various Legal topics.

Thereafter, Mrs. Nagen embarked on a legal journey characterised by high-profile cases, where she often represented clients in complex and precedent-setting criminal trials. Her dedication to justice, coupled with a meticulous approach to case preparation and an exceptional ability to articulate compelling arguments, earned her a reputation as one of the foremost criminal barristers in Mauritius.

Parallel to her flourishing legal career, Mrs. Nagen harbored a profound belief in the power of education. Prior to becoming a full-time Lecturer-in -Law, she served as a part-time lecturer for three years, sharing her extensive knowledge and real-world experiences with students. Recognizing the transformative impact of education, Mrs. Nagen transitioned to a full-time lecturer-in-Law role at the Middlesex University Mauritius in 2019, dedicating herself to shaping the next generation of legal professionals. Through her lectures, Mrs. Nagen not only imparts legal knowledge but also instils in her students the ethical compass necessary for the practice of law.

Mrs. Nagen's contributions extend beyond the courtroom and the classroom. Through her work, Mrs. Nagen has left an indelible mark on the legal landscape of Mauritius, championing the cause of justice, and upholding the rule of law.
