Abstract

The purpose of this article is to explore the role of music and music improvisation on the cognitive system and how their practice can benefit older people with cognitive impairment. Music practice can be considered a non-pharmacological intervention that can be used for improving and/or the rehabilitation of psychological, behavioural and social abilities of elderly people with cognitive disabilities. Musical training can enhance attention, memory, intrinsic motivation and problem-solving skills. These type of interactions enhance communication skills and can be effectively used as tools to facilitate the interaction with those people in whom communication may seem lost. The review will also explore how musical interventions can be an effective educational practice that allows and facilitate inter-generational and peers relation abilities.
