Abstract

There is a gap in the peer-reviewed literature on the theory, definition, and epistemology of hypnotherapies. This lack of clarity has undermined the scientific credibility of hypnotherapy and contributed to an impetus for research. As a result, hypnotherapy is not currently recommended in clinical guidelines in the UK or the United States. This paper outlines the epistemological underpinnings of Lesserian Curative Hypnotherapy, the positioning amongst different types of hypnotherapies, and the definition of both hypnosis and Lesserian Curative Hypnotherapy. Therefore, Lesserian Curative Hypnotherapy as a treatment approach uses hypnosis to find the cause or origin of a problem based on the individual's subjective experiences. Hypnosis is used to access the subconscious of a patient to identify and address a misinterpretation that has created a subconscious core belief and, therefore, symptoms that the patient is experiencing as a result. Lesserian Curative Hypnotherapy was chosen as it is fairly homogenously practised, trademarked, and quality monitored, therefore potentially lending itself as a subject of both quantitative and qualitative scientific inquiry.
