Description

Bendon is a practice-based researcher working predominantly with moving image media. Through both practical and written work, she investigates different forms of knowledge represented across disciplines in the sciences and arts. Within recent projects it is the tensions between methodologies that form the most interesting relationships and reveal what creative work offers cross-disciplinary projects.
This exhibition and conference presentation consolidate a body of written and practice-led work commissioned by an EPSRC funded research consortium - Vivacity2020, studying Sustainability and the 24-hour city
(http://www.vivacity2020.eu/).
Bendon was commissioned to work with their research materials, resulting in three new filmworks: Skirting, Flight, and Cheek by Jowl. The exhibition (and public discussions) contributed to the public dissemination of the Vivacity2020 project.
Bendon's contribution looks at various issues raised by the research teams, including city fringe areas (Shaw,S., Penn,A.); and crime (Davey,C.L., Wootton,A.B., Cooper,R.). Bendon also looked beyond the Vivacity2020 research materials to the works of Ackroyd,P. (2001); sociologist Zukin,S. (1995); and Godard,JL. (1967) to draw on wider discourses around urban development.
The work was shown as part of London Architecture Week and London Architecture Biennale (June 2006). http://www.citiesinstitute.org/NewsletterSummer06.pdf [page3]; and at Urbis, Manchester (April 2007). 4000 recorded exhibition visitors.
Urbis also staged the conference Sustainability City: The Art of Urban Living where Bendon presented a paper exploring the role of the artist within an interdisciplinary project, detailing discussions around consultation of communities, and the relationship between the artworks and the wider project. Flexibility in approach allowed Bendon to introduce alternative research questions and new insights as valuable as science approaches.
