Kim Brandstrup website

This website constitutes a major research target in the framework of my AHRC Fellowship, and is organised to bring together a number of ways of approaching my work, when the chief focus is narrativity in dance (central to the AHRC Fellowship). It includes a paper co-authored with Niki Pollard, entitled “The Instant Before Choice: A Choreographer's Practical Speculations on Time and Perception”, in which I engage as choreographer with the notion that choreographic and intellectual enquiry might actually be bound up together in surprising ways. I was interested in "poetic metaphors" used in practice(such as the idea of a movement's "resonance"), that seemed to me to facilitate participants' creative work; and I was interested in the notion that a consensus seems to develop in a creative session as to if something "works" or not. The paper discusses my sense that this notion of movement resonance is experienced, in the creative moment, as strictly time-based, sensed rhythmically as the punctuation of movement. Second, the site includes the text of my extended interview with Susan Melrose, entitled “Theorising 'Kim Brandstrup At Work'”: in this interview we effectively ‘stage' an enquiry between a professional choreographer and an academic writer, working to the principle that theoretical perspectives central to the writer should be approached as ‘notional'. We wanted the ways of seeing of the choreographer to remain uppermost in the discussion, but we wanted not to avoid theoretical questions which seemed to the writer to resonate with my practice. The site also includes a range of visual material - e.g. rehearsal material from Hamlet (2003) and Anatomy of a Storyteller (2005), which reveals the narrative potential of a moment caught in time: my sense here is the fine details from which spectators make narratives are caught in a photographic instant (photographer J.
