Abstract

The chapter explores the contribution Formulation might make to in-service development and support for creative practitioners. The author examines the clinical technique of Formulation and questions how it might inform current conceptions of identity, positionality and professional development for the ‘creative practitioner’, particularly for early career professionals where young people are establishing themselves into professional practice. New practitioner orientations are tackled as a necessity for practice in the 21st century with a focus on identities referencing some key works and authors and making comparisons back to the ‘ideal’ type professions. This is expanded into the main literature on reflection (Schön; Dewey). The chapter finishes with an exploration of the Links between Formulation and the Development of Creative Practitioners.
