Messages

The research focuses on aesthetic issues regarding inter-media translation, specifically the translation from moving image/text (film) to static image/text (book). The primary objective is the production of an artists’ book to accompany the release of a DVD of films by the artist. Central to the project is the film MESSAGES 1981-4 which is characterised by its challenging use of on-screen text and image, and can be identified as a ‘film poem’ (Todd LUX 2004).
The 60 page A5 book develops ideas expressed in the film and provides a dynamic counterpoint, as well as functioning as an entry point into the film.
The research develops new aesthetic ideas in the relationship of book to film and builds on work done in the artist’s previous DVD/ book combination (‘Guy Sherwin: Optical Sound Films 1971-2007’ LUX 2007).
