Dr Ruqiyabi Naz Awan

Naz’s academic background is in educational psychology with her research evaluating the impact of technology on teachers and learners. She has been Programme Leader on Higher Education Teacher training programmes at Queen Mary University of London and more recently at Middlesex University. Her most recent research has looked at examining the issues underlying retention, engagement, progression and experience for young male Black and Ethnic minority students in Further and Higher Education in the UK. The issue of retention, engagement and progression amongst male students was also examined in the context of the United Arab Emirates in relation to Emiratisation. While in the Emirates Naz’s research also examined the relationship of education and labour market economics, health education, career expectations as well as fiscal literacy. The final strand of her research in the Emirates looked at the issue of teacher education and development in relation capacity building of key and transferable skills. Before joining the Education Dept at Middlesex she held academic positions as a Senior Lecturer and Programme Leader for an MRes programme within the Graduate School at the University of East London. She has also been the Head of Student Success at City University and was responsible for working with Faculties and Schools to improve students’ engagement as well as designing and overseeing projects aligned to the Access and Participation Plan. Prior to this she was a Lecturer in Education and Programme Leader at The British University in Dubai on post graduate programmes (MEd, EdD).  She has taught at the UG, MA, MSc, MEd, MRes and EdD and PhD level in the UK, Japan, Belgium and the United Arab Emirates.
