Abstract | The Dance Fitness Indicator© (DFI) is a studio-based high intensity dance fitness field test and training tool, designed at Middlesex University, that can be used to test, monitor and develop the fitness levels of dancers. It relates contemporary dance (art) with fitness (science), through choreographed dance movement that relates to fitness components, helping dancers to identify what areas of fitness need addressing to improve their physical dance performance. The intensity of the DFI effectively stresses energy systems, and relates to the high intensities required for dance performance (approximately 10-12 BLa mmol.L-1, 169-184 HR b.min-1/90% HR max) demonstrating potential uses as a high intensity fitness test; pre-performance screening tool to measure readiness; and a high intensity fitness training tool. This presentation aims to introduce and share the DFI, supported by video material. |
