Abstract

As visitors enter Jasper Marsalis's Still Life at London's Chisenhale Gallery, the assistant warns them that the installation's four Quad ESL-63 speakers operate at very high voltages and could be lethal if touched. Whether or not the danger is quite as immediate as this suggests, it lends the experience a certain tension: there is nothing like the persistent sense that you might be fried at any moment to make you conscious of the contingency of embodied existence.
