Abstract

The website makes available as a single book-length-equivalent collection, a series of writings/keynote presentations externally commissioned and largely published elsewhere, over the period of audit (2002-2007). It aims to provide a wide online readership with critical reflections on a disciplinary specificity in arts professional/expert performance-making practices, and to do so by drawing on a range of media not allowed by traditional publication. It aims in addition to trigger further PaR enquiry. The orientation is complex: 1. a critical overview and analysis of certain tendencies and omissions in published Performance Studies writing since the 1980s, suggesting that much of the writing concerned actually represents expert Spectator Studies produced by professional writers and educators, and performed on performance viewed as product; 2. a sustained enquiry into the widely-neglected issue of performance-disciplinary mastery, and the 'knowledge status' of expert practice; 3. the interface in performance-making between practitioner singularity and the logics of production; 4. the largely under-represented role of expert-intuitive/professional-intuitive operations in performance-making;5. suggested new directions in performance enquiry, from the perspective of expert practitioner epistemics, which targets decision-making, in expert/ disciplinary process, as a research undertaking. The site also references a number of already-published texts in refereed journals and book-length collections. All were produced in the context of multidisciplinary performing arts research at Middlesex University, and they largely reference work by expert practitioners whose own research activity is central to that research culture. The website aims, in 'knowledge-political' terms, to maximise dissemination to the wider research communities. The site has recorded around 7,500 unique visitors between 2002 and 2007.
