Title | Green criminology, environmental security and organised / white collar crime: the case of Naples and some proposals for the policy and research agendas. |
Authors | Ruggiero, V. and South, N. |
Abstract | This paper will outline the development of a green criminology as relevant to the study of organised / white collar / economic crime. It will note the importance of notions and practices of environmental security for local and global sustainability and resilience. It then moves to a case study of Naples, where a serious garbage disposal crisis occurred last year illustrating how devastating environmental and public health consequences can follow from corruption and crime. This provides the basis for some suggested revisions to the concepts of white collar and organised crime. The Naples case has attracted international attention and prompts serious thoughts about the development of new forms of "dirty capitalism". The paper concludes with suggestions for future policy and research directions. |
