Abstract | Abolitionism is not only a strategy or a set of demands aimed at the reduction (or suppression) of custody, it is also a perspective, a philosophy, an approach. This is exactly what makes it relevant today. Penal abolitionism challenges conventional definitions of crime and the law, while defying official views of the meanings and effects of punishment. This paper sets off with some general observations around imprisonment in Europe. It then examines the main analytical components of abolitionism as expressed by the founding fathers of this school of thought. Finally, a sketch is provided of contemporary contributions which reveal how and to what extent the legacy of abolitionism has been handed down to radical reformers. |
