Abstract | Being a member of a group can affect our opinions, our decisions, and even our behaviour. In this chapter, we will consider behaviour within groups, and we will discover some of the striking findings made by social psychologists in their research on how groups operate. We investigate social facilitation and social inhibition, or the way that your performance on a task can be helped or hindered by the mere presence of others. We will also look at how working in teams can sometimes lead individuals to decrease their efforts, as a form of social loafing. We will also explore how it is that groups make decisions, and how groupthink might pose problems. We will consider how individual behaviour may change dramatically when an individual is part of a group, and how deindividuation may occur, with individuals giving up or losing an individual 'sense of self' when part of a group. Finally, we will consider the phenomenon of group polarisation, and of individual influence on group behaviour. |
