Title | Intelligence: issues in a word or a field. |
Authors | Durant, A. |
Abstract | This article outlines the history, various meanings of, and controversies surrounding the word ‘intelligence’ (and related 'intelligent'). It develops the argument that what makes the different senses significant, as regards the emergence of a new field of interdisciplinary research known as 'intelligence science', is that the different meanings may be deployed to support very different psychological, social and political viewpoints. Controversies surrounding the development, social distribution and value of 'intelligence' may as a result be confused by either deliberate or unintended failure to distinguish between conflicting potentialities of the word as used on any given occasion. |
