Abstract | Networks of queues provide effective models for communication systems. It is possible to use these models to obtain exact and efficient solutions under certain restricted conditions and assumptions. A variety of processes exist for modelling open queuing systems which are prone to breakdowns. In many practical systems, arrival rates may vary randomly over time (e.g. the superposition of packet data in communication system modelling). The Markov–modulated Poisson process (MMPP) [3] has been extensively and effectively used for modelling such arrival and departure processes. |
