Description | Cavusoglu's project at Transit Space consists of two exhibitions, Vitrine I and Vitrine II. For this first exhibition, the artist has returned to his birthplace in Bulgaria, and chosen to focus on its art galleries, public-sculptures and the interior of his old art school in Sofia. But this is not a trip of remembrance. Cavusoglu's work questions the motives behind creativity, presenting us with neglected and demoted monuments that have long since lost their original purpose. Using photography and film, he photographs rural and urban landscapes; seemingly banal scenes, that gradually convey coded information about past and present political and cultural intentions, to create what Cavusoglu refers to as 'politicised landscapes'. The landscape thus becomes a measure and means of social experience, through which aspects of personal and cultural identities are negotiated. |
