| Description | Dust Breeding is an ongoing research project that represents and critiques the construct of ideas in spatial art practices. The work consists of a multi-surface anamorphic projection, which is situated in the threshold between visibility, informal architecture and three-dimensional artwork. The autonomous parts within the installation are intrinsically entwined with a larger concept, which refers to and borrows the title of Man Ray’s 1920 photograph Dust Breeding (Duchamp’s Large Glass with Dust Motes). The photograph depicts an aerial view of Duchamp’s iconic work in the studio having accumulated a year’s worth of environmental dirt and dust. Duchamp dedicated much time to articulating the relationship between form and ‘space-time continuum’ and the ‘rehabilitation of perspective,’ as exemplified in several of his larger installation works. The anamorphic drawings are site-specific, and each iteration requires new optical orchestrations and reframing of contextual ideas in a way that is reflective of the environment and its geography. The individual elements of the drawing constantly shift in form and context depending on the site of presentation. The methods used during the development and the production are multivalent and involve the expertise of architects, urban planners, graphic designers, media specialists and conservationists. These complex drawings unfold a process of cultural translation, which ultimately creates its own temporality and spatial dynamics. The audience can interact with the drawings by walking across their surface - their movements are depicted by a security camera and relayed to a monitor, or projected on walls, which displays the audiences seemingly walking inside an informal architectural and sculptural hybrid form. Dust Breeding has been presented globally in museums and art galleries, such as Galleria d’Arte Moderna (GAM), Milan (2018) and The Guggenheim Museum New York, (2016). Furthermore, Dust Breeding has been included in the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum’s permanent collection. |
