Wie gerät ein ganzes Volk in die Fänge des Extremismus und was denken ganz normale Menschen darüber?

Immer wieder reist die in England lebende Ernestine Amy Buller nach Deutschland und führt hier, insbesondere zwischen 1934 und 1938, intensive Gespräche mit Menschen unterschiedlicher Gesellschaftsschichten. Sie möchte verstehen, warum in einem so kultivierten Land so viele Menschen der Nazi-Ideologie verfallen konnten. Ihre Gespräche mit Offizieren, Studenten, Hausfrauen, Beamten, Pastoren, aristokratischen Großgrundbesitzern u.v.a. veröffentlicht sie 1943 in England unter dem Titel Darkness over Germany. Die Stimmen dieser Zeitzeugen sind weitaus differenzierter, als wir vielleicht annehmen würden. Das Buch nimmt uns mit auf eine Reise in die Vergangenheit und lässt uns an Diskussionen teilhaben, als hätten wir sie selbst erlebt. Eine echte Entdeckung!
