TitleThe “independent” condition: perspectives on Eastern Europe’s cultural sector
AuthorsMorariu, V.
Abstract

The text focuses on the Eastern European cultural context and is written from the perspective of Morariu's practice as board member of the Romanian Administration for the National Fund for Culture. It deconstructs the term 'independent cultural producer', and emphasises the impossibility of structural independence either from state institutions or neoliberal capitalism. Nevertheless, Morariu regards this as an opportunity for the articulation of a critical practice that, while reflective of various forms of dependencies, seeks to re-appropriate and engage tactically and collectively the infrastructure of hegemonic state apparatuses.
