Abstract

Introduction to the edited collection "Growing Bougainville's Future: Choices for an Island and its Peoples" which addresses the choices faced by the peoples of Bougainville in relation to the reopening of the Panguna mine against the backdrop of the Island's pending inde­pendence referendum. The mine, which was one of the largest copper-gold mines in the world and acted as one of the triggers for Bougainville's civil war, and continues to be central to debates about Bougainville’s economic and political future.
